Capital & Investing

Investor-operator with 15+ years designing and delivering investment-linked work across Africa, Asia, and Europe. I led SNV's alternative revenue strategy across a 26-country portfolio: sole author of the governance framework for its first EUR 5m listed equity allocation, running asset-manager selection end to end, and building three business cases projecting EUR 270m+ in five-year revenue. Before that, COO of a venture-backed Japanese agrifintech with direct responsibility for capital at risk, where loan recovery rose from 76% to 97%.

The work behind the numbers

Five pieces of work for readers who think in portfolios, governance, and capital at risk.

SNV · Global Business Strategy & Risk Lead

Designing investment governance from a blank page

SNV, a global development organisation working across 26 countries, had never invested its reserves. Over a two-year mandate I ran the feasibility study that identified c.40% of reserves as investable capital, sole-authored the Governance Framework for a first EUR 5m listed equity allocation (investment criteria, ESG screening, committee structure, due diligence, exit strategy), and ran the procurement that appointed the external asset manager from four bidders.

Approved by the Executive Team and Supervisory Board; the full fund-operations cycle delivered, from policy design to manager appointment.

Degas · Chief Operating Officer

Co-leading a USD 15m blended capital raise

Degas needed growth capital that matched a two-continent operating reality: Japanese venture investors and Ghanaian commercial banks, in three currencies. I co-led the raise end to end, owning investor diligence, unit-economics modelling, financial reporting, and governance, and acted as primary counterpart to institutional investors through and after close.

USD 15m raised across equity and debt, funding a period in which revenue grew roughly eightfold, with investor-grade reporting that held up throughout.

Taking loan recovery from 76% to 97%

Recovery across a fast-growing smallholder lending portfolio had to improve without slowing growth. I commissioned and oversaw an AI-driven credit scoring system linking yield data, climate-risk exposure, and repayment history, and rebuilt portfolio monitoring around cohort-based risk analysis and disciplined routines.

Recovery rose from 76% to 97% and held above 95% as the portfolio grew to 46,000+ farmers across c.20,000 hectares.

Building the case for EUR 270m+ in new revenue

To reduce dependence on traditional donor funding, I built the financial business case template adopted across three new revenue lines (carbon finance, commercial value chain services, and investment-linked advisory), then authored all three financial models, including hurdle rates constructed from first principles and three-scenario NPV analysis.

Combined five-year projections exceed EUR 270m; the recommendations became the foundation of SNV's alternative revenue strategy.
